Student Flutes

Usually closed hole, C foot, silver plated

If made properly, a beginner flute can be easy to play even if fingers are not positioned perfectly. C foot actually allows for a more open sound, and you basically never even need B foot, but it has become a standard that more advanced flutes have it.

Price range for a decent one would be from $500 to $1000

Rental prices are usually between $25 and $35

We don't advise to buy on eBay, or even any other store which doesn't have a good flute department, and doesn't even check their flute inventory when it comes or before they ship out. Every flute has to be checked and often adjusted before shipping, so you should buy from a reputable dealer or a local music store where they also service their flutes.

Which one to buy?

Yamaha 200 series

The most popular one out there. Click on this to check the specs and compare to their entire line-up of flutes. Probably made in Indonesia, although they may have some made in Japan. Yamaha in the US closed down over 20 years ago. Price tag about $680, but check current deals wherever you are.

Eastman 200 series

Haven't tried it, but Eastman is a Chinese owned reputable company, and they had acquired Haynes flutes 20 years ago, so that gave them access to flute knowledge, experts, procedures etc. Check it out. Price tag could be close to $1000, but again, check the deals around you.

Gemeinhardt 2SP

Used to be America's favorite along side Yamaha, but frankly it used to be quite terrible back in the day. I trust that things have improved. It's made in the US, so check with your store if interested. Price tag $400
